History of the Gigantic Greely Garage $ale

It started back in 2001 when the Hayward family of Greely West wanted to do something to thank the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for saving their daughter’s life. She had been diagnosed with leukemia in 2000 and after she had completed her 2 year plus long treatment, the family decided to hold a fundraiser to help other children battling cancer – thus the GGG$ was created. They made a commitment to continue with the sale for five years to commemorate/celebrate their daughter Megan’s, five years off treatment.

They recruited many friends, family and co-workers to volunteer at this event and many of the original volunteers still show up eager, able and willing to help collect, price, sort, organize and sell the community’s donations at the GGG$. Everyone worked very hard, as the results show, with a steady increase in the sale’s revenue. Here is a breakdown of their remarkable success:

2002 $3,840.95

2003 $8,035.00

2004 $9,100.10

2005 $10,513.65

2006 $11,330.29

2007 $10,010.15.

2008 $16,131.52

A Grand Total of $68,961.66 has been raised in the 7 years of the GGG Sale!

The Baar/Snelgrove family took up the challenge of coordinating the sale from the Hayward’s in 2007. They, like the Hayward’s have a child who has had cancer, also leukemia, and had helped out with the sale in previous years. Not wanting to let this incredibly successful venture go by the wayside, they shadowed the Hayward’s to learn how to run it and consulted with them (a lot) on how to continue the sale. Again, the entire group of volunteers (75 or so) along with our community sponsors, continue to be outstanding supporters and willing to go the extra mile to make this event successful. Their efforts are absolutely essential and much appreciated.

This year, 2009, the fund raising goal is $16,000. We hope that our community continues to support our wonderful, caring and excellent children’s hospital, CHEO.

I think that the history regarding this garage sale is wonderful. What wonderful families they are. I was happy to donate to the sale last year, and will be dropping off several bags and boxes again this year.

The 2010 Garage Sale IS Happening, after looking for a while like it wouldn’t. A Slight Change of Venue though. The 2010 Sale has a tentative date of Sept. 25th, and a NEW Locaton. The Baggott Family of Kanata has stepped up to the plate to help out and run the 2010 Sale. It’s looking like it will take place at the OZ Dome in Stittsville. More info will follow once plans have been firmed up, and a link to the new Venues’ website will be added to the main page here. For now, you may send any enquiries to Judy at

I think that its great that the Baggott family has decided to help keep the garage sale running, but its a shame that it won’t be in Greely any longer. I know that many people in the area were happy to contribute to the sale both in donations and purchases. It will be missed this year, I’m sure, but perhaps we can see another charity garage sale in Greely in the near future.
