Megan Hayward’s Story

It was the call that changed our world….January 16, 2000….A doctor from CHEO called and told us to bring Megan back in. (We had her at ER the night before due to severe arm pain) They wouldn’t tell us what was wrong over the phone, but they did tell us to pack a bag. She was being admitted.

Megan was diagnosed with leukemia (ALL) later that day and treatment began right away. To say we were terrified would be an understatement. Our little 6-year old girl would lose her hair, her energy and 20 pounds, but not her spirit. CHEO cared for her physical needs as well as her emotional ones. They were there for Mom and Dad too. Megan’s weekly chemo treatments lasted for over two years.

This spring marks Megan’s 5 years off-treatment anniversary. It is significant; she is now considered a long-term childhood cancer survivor. Thanks to CHEO we now have a teenager! We can never repay the for what they have done for use. Five years of garage sale proceeds is just a start. God bless the staff of our hospital and everyone who supports CHEO.
